Solar DIY Workshops

The “Solar DIY” sessions were one of the three projects running within the “DIY Renewables” Workshop series, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering. Its aim was to target 14-16 years old girls from North-East London and motivate them to study STEM subject, helping thus counteract the gender disbalance in sciences.

On fours Wednesdays in November and December 2019, students from St Thomas More Catholic School joined the PPL PWR team at University College London where a lab had been kindly put at their disposal for this project.

During those four sessions, the girls gained a deeper knowledge in solar energy and CAD modelling, the basis they then used to build their own solar-powered phone chargers.

It was wonderful to see how their confidence strengthening from one session to the other and share their enthusiasm and curiosity.
